Different systems and incompatible technologies in European rail transport repeatedly cause considerable effort and time losses at borders. The EU's European Deployment Plan (EDP) aims to drive forward the cross-border standardisation of systems and technologies in order to improve train passability in Europe significantly. The Nuremberg - Passau - border project is part of this plan and includes the digitalisation of the control and safety technology (LST: Leit- und Sicherungstechnik) along the approximately 220 km route.

To this end, the line will be equipped with ETCS technology with signals. Existing mechanical- and relay interlockings will be replaced by modern electronic interlockings (ESTW: Elektronische Stellwerke) and digital interlockings (DSTW: Digitale Stellwerke). This will make the line future-proof and more reliable. Once the project has been completed, it will also be possible to run more trains on the existing tracks. This opens up the opportunity to strengthen rail transport and relieve the pressure on the roads.
