Digital interlocking Warnemünde

Digital interlockings are the latest generation of signal boxes. In Warnemünde, the existing relay signal box has been replaced by digital interlocking (DSTW). It is the first digital interlocking technology in the long-distance and conurbation network in Germany that also controls long-distance passenger trains.

As part of the first construction phase, track field concentrators (GFK: Gleisfeldkonzentrator) were installed in Lütten-Klein and Warnemünde Werft for the new digital technology. The signaller uses these from the temporary control centre in Warnemünde to set the signals and points in the section between Rostock-Bramow and Warnemünde-Werft.

Realisation:

Construction phase 1:

- Installation and equipping of the DSTW in the section between Rostock-Bramow and Warnemünde-Werft, including 9 switches, 26 signals, contents of thesignal box

- Construction of track field concentrators (GFK) in Lütten-Klein and Warnemünde Werft to house the new technology

- Commissioning 30 October 2019

Modification of the Warnemünde long-distance and regional station

Warnemünde station with the Warnemünde-Werft station section is located in the north of the Hanseatic city of Rostock. Not only long-distance and regional trains depart from here, but also ferries to the "Hohe Düne" district and cruise ships.

The planning approval for the project was issued by the German Federal Railway Authority (EBA) in December 2017. Warnemünde station was modernised and expanded from October 2018 to May 2020. It was completed on 19 May 2020.

The new Dresden - Berlin - Rostock long-distance line went into operation with the timetable change in December 2019. From May 2020, this long-distance line was extended to Warnemünde. The platforms were extended to 370 meters to allow ICE trains to stop. Long-distance rail travellers and special traffic for tourists in particular will benefit from this.

Implementation:

Construction stage 2:

- Dismantling of the passenger tunnel

- Construction of a new, barrier-free crossing in the northern area of the station to enable a comfortable transition between train, city and ship

- Construction of two new long-distance platforms (platforms 4 and 5), each 370 meters long

- Optimisation of the track layout: the position of some of the tracks was adjusted and their superstructure renewed

- Construction of 13 switches and 20 signals

As part of the pre-series projects (VSP), the new digital interlocking - (DSTW) - with modular interchangeable components was tested and prepared for the subsequent series projects.

Benefit:

- Qualified testing of all processes, subsystems and also of the overall system of digital signaling technology (DLST)

- A secure basis for the realisation of series projects
